We’re a family business – kbhc was born in our living room, or maybe in our home office. No one really remembers, or maybe it’s that we can’t pluck out a particular date for the birth of the idea. We started the company itself in spring of 2023. We were looking ahead to a summer with more time than we’d ever had before, so we began making plans to design a game or two. We had a project we’d been working on before that we rediscovered, and we began excitedly resurrecting the game and planning how we’d structure the summer around our other responsibilities while leaving ample time for game design.
And then things came crashing down. Isn’t that always the story? Best laid plans and all. We were facing a job loss and a financial crunch, and we had to make a decision: should we keep at it with our game and take the risk, or put it all aside and work on replacing the lost job as quickly as possible?
We took the risk. We’re still taking it. But we also learned that together, we can do amazing things. We haven’t finished that first game we were working on. It’s in progress. But we did design several others… and we learned just how well our different skills, abilities, and preferences fit together into an organic whole.
So kbhc games started this year, but the curious, creative spirit that drove us to create experiences… we’ve had that all along. Suddenly we just had the time to embrace it.
Did you ever wonder what you could make if you had the time?
kbhc games is:
Alisha Karabinus & Terence Babb, co-founders, co-designers
kbhc also includes their children, who are themselves wonderful, creative designers, and who deserve credit for their patience as projects began to consume communal spaces. kbhc is an amalgam of the various name combinations in the household – everyone is represented. (Except the pets. They’re just cute.)
Thank you for being here to share in this moment with us.
